ARTIST STATEMENT

“I always hold the naivety of a child when I create or do a project. Art does me, not I do art! I don't try too hard, because I do what I wanna do when I wanna do, expressing myself genuinely, since I never learned or been taught musically, or was in the art school. I don't control anything. Nor do I wanna be macho. I know who I am. And do everything for the love of it.

In other words, till this day , I don't know what I am doing, because I have no rules. Same as I consider AI a great tool to create art in any media. Since it is the same as sampling music in the Hip Hop genre. It is just a tool to create more art.

I started to create a long time ago out of boredom. It keeps my mind occupied. From digital art to music videos, or even to making music itself. That's how dem0scene was born, through experimentation and having fun with the media. Our website and the dem0scene name itself ranked top in an algorithm and search engines near the Museum of Wiesbaden, in the city where we are located. We operate as a creative hub, an independent platform and an online magazine for creative people & musicians.” - Linas Lukas Borovka

INTERVIEW

First of all, you grew up in Vilnius and now live in Germany. How have these different environments shaped your creative identity?

Where I come from, you cannot see yourself becoming Michael Jackson or something, only yourself. It was weird growing up in Lithuania as an introverted creative person. I'm very shy. Till this day, I don't have any like-minded peers. I work with creative people all the time, but I don't have any creative friends.
Then I moved to Germany, and I started making more collaborative projects and art. Lithuania was like an army corps for me. But the vision stays the same. All my friends are tougher than I am.

Dem0scene moves between label, brand, and creative hub. How do you personally define what it is today?

All of the above. I define it as something bigger than me. It completely overshadows me as a person. And it surrounds me with this artistic mystic. Which is amazing.

You often say you “don’t control anything” and let the work happen. What does your creative process actually look like day to day?

Success has nothing to do with happiness; it's two different things. And since I don't do any commercial things, I just like to get my stuff out there.
For me, success is what I will gonna do next creatively. Not trying to be famous here with my art. I just wanna do what I wanna do. To bring that creativity and presentation out there.
I love to freestyle.

You didn’t go through formal art or music education. How has that shaped the way you approach making work compared to trained artists?

I come from a musical family, and I got my art education from "the streets". Since I was 14 years old, I wanted to be a rapper, an MC. I found out about Sony Vegas video editor and started experimenting with it, making my own videos and clips. Falling in love with it. I think if I were to learn the basics or go to school, I would lose my identity & authenticity and my way of doing things. Because I consider my art odd. And I don't wanna lose my oddness and weirdness.

Why are you particularly drawn to digital tools and AI in your practice, and what do they allow you to do that other mediums don’t?

I used to love to do cosplay photography, and after that, digitally manipulate the piece. I haven't worked with AI that much. I know how to use it, just to know how to use it. Because all AI art, if not done the right way, is called AI slop or AI jank. It looks cookie-cutter and same old, same old. So I'm more with my old-school ways of doing art. Not promoting AI usage here since you need to learn how to create from scratch. Art is like a meditation. And till this day, I'm experiencing what I made spiritually.

You describe art as something that “does you” rather than something you do. Can you explain what that means in practice?

There is no such thing as writer's block or creator's block. It's simple, you just don't wanna do it, or you wanna do it. If I were sitting here with a blueprint, thinking about what I would do next. It's not rocket science, you know? I look at myself as an empty glass.

Your work mixes music, video, and digital art. How do you decide when a project becomes one medium or another, or do they all blur together?

Good question. I don’t know how to answer this *laughs* But probably they all blur together.

You mention boredom as an early starting point for creating. How has that motivation changed over time, if at all?

My motivation for doing the art is not a perfect life & constant struggle to live, not in a negative way. My difficult upbringing. Pain. What's the point of being here? Existential crisis. And since art is abstract and multidimensional in meaning, everyone can find something different in it.

How do you see dem0scene in relation to ideas of originality, sampling, and authorship in digital culture?

I'm so happy that dem0scene is bigger than me. I just wanna be the guy in the backstage planning the next move. As I mentioned, I don't wanna be famous or do something commercially. Still, I'm so blessed that dem0scene is ranked near museums, international art magazines, and well-established websites like Medium and other curatorial media.

Lastly, what are you currently experimenting with, and where do you want dem0scene or your practice to go next?

I will Madrid Protocol dem0scene, trademark it all over the world, start making a clothing brand and land my art in more art magazines and art fairs. And guys, thank you so much for having me here, sending you all my love. It's my pleasure, Altiba9 magazine!
