Founded in 2023 by the dynamic sisters Drs. Pamela and Michele Chrabieh, Kulturnest (“the nest of culture”), emerges as a vibrant cultural oasis in Sin-el-Fil, Lebanon. This cultural haven, which was lovingly restored from an early 20th-century family house, breathes life into a neighborhood yearning for versatile arts and culture venues. The Chrabiehs' collaboration epitomizes the fusion of artistry and organizational finesse. Pamela, a multi-talented artist, researcher, and curator, infuses the space with her artistic and academic expertise. Michele, a Human Resources expert with a passion for craft spirits, lends his skills to create an environment of warm hospitality.
Kulturnest is an inclusive, homey space that celebrates diversity through the arts and fosters a sense of belonging among individuals from various backgrounds. Committed to art, culture, and social transformation, it thrives to become a vibrant platform where creative empowerment and intercultural dialogue flourish. The founders

PAMELA CHRABIEH

Lebanese-Canadian visual artist, researcher, activist, writer, program manager, and consultant Pamela Chrabieh, Ph.D. is the co-founder and CEO/Managing Director of Kulturnest, a new cultural space in Lebanon. She holds a Higher Diploma in Fine Arts and Restoration of Icons (1999, Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts [ALBA], University of Balamand, Lebanon). She pursued her higher studies at the University of Montreal in Quebec – Canada: Minor in Religious Sciences (1999), MA in Theology, Religions, and Cultures (2001), Ph.D. in Theology-Sciences of Religions (2005), and held two Postdoctoral Fellowship positions financed by the Governments of Quebec and Canada from 2005 to 2008. Chrabieh was a university professor in Canada, Lebanon, and the UAE for 17 years, and is the author of numerous publications. As a visual artist, she exhibited her work in Canada, Lebanon, the United Arab Emirates, Italy, Spain, Greece, Poland, Hong Kong, China, Korea, the UK, the USA, and the metaverse. As an activist, she has been a member of local/international NGOs and a member of executive committees and advisory/editorial boards of several organizations since 1995. Selected as one of the 100 most influential women in Lebanon (Women Leaders Directory 2013) and ‘Most Exceptional Teaching Fellow’ in 2008 (University of Montreal), Chrabieh won several national and regional prizes in Canada (including Forces Avenir Université de Montréal, Forces Avenir Québec, Prix Lieutenant-Gouverneur du Québec). Her Peace Education ‘Diplomacy of the Dish’ activity was selected as one of the most innovative activities during the Innovation Week of the United Arab Emirates in 2015.

MICHELE CHRABIEH

Michele is a seasoned HR professional with around 18 years of professional experience in the field, spanning the MENAT region and parts of Europe, notably France. Her expertise includes cross-cultural management, organizational design, HR infrastructure, HR technology, and EX. She is not only well-versed in the field but also holds a Master's and a Doctorate in HR, earned in Canada (HEC Montréal) and France (Grenoble Ecole de Management), respectively. Michele has contributed to the HR field through publications, including an e-book available on Amazon Kindle, aptly titled: A Practitioner Glimpse on How Far HR Can Go. Competencies that Matter!
In addition to her professional background, Michele holds a Bachelor's degree in Hotel Management and Tourism, which marks the origin of her passion for culinary arts and parallel creative pursuits. Throughout the years, she has explored various eclectic interests, ranging from knitting, sewing, and maintaining a cooking blog to language learning and writing and even experimenting with musical instruments.
Notably, Michele has a deep-seated dedication to the craft of handcrafting alcoholic blends. Her particular fondness lies in perfecting the art of limoncello, infusing it with her unique touch. However, above all her pursuits, Michele cherishes people and the joy of laughter. Her personality exudes a zest for life, and she maintains a strong commitment to celebrating and embracing diverse cultures and traditions.

UNYIELDING EXHIBITION

Based in Sin-el-Fil (Lebanon), Kulturnest is launching 'Unyielding,' its inaugural collective art exhibition, on October 28, 2023.

The exhibition celebrates fortitude and resilience. Contrary to common misconceptions, resilience is defined as an individual's or a community's capacity to face adversity, overcome challenges, and bounce back from difficult or traumatic situations while learning lessons from the past. It is often associated with fortitude, which signifies inner strength, courage, and determination to persevere through trials.

The exhibition's setting at Kulturnest offers an ideal backdrop for a multifaceted visual exploration of these two concepts. The space bears scars from the tumultuous local history, yet it has transformed into an inclusive and welcoming environment.

Here, the works and narratives of 22 artists express the right to constructive memory and projects of/voices for freedom. These artists include Manar Ali Hassan, Amira Al Zein, Dzovig Arnelian, Chris Assoury, Loulou Bissat, Pamela Chrabieh, Joyce Hatem, George Khoury, Aline Jabre, Ziad Jreige, Yara Loucas, Gilbert Loutfi, Cliff Makhoul, Maral Maniss, Toufic Melhem, Merheb Merheb, Gaia Maria Noujeim, Rayane Raidi, Nada Raphael, Aida Rubeiz, Roula Salibi, and Samia Soubra. With a special appearance of Minal Shaab.

The 'Unyielding' exhibition is open to the public from October 28, 2023 (7:00-10:00 pm), until January 2, 2024, every day (except Sundays and holidays) from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM.

INTERVIEW

First of all, let’s talk about yourself. You both had significant international experiences, in various fields. What prompted you to start this new project in Lebanon?

We have been fortunate to amass significant international experiences across various domains. Our profound connection to our roots and the exciting prospect of a fresh adventure compelled us to embark on this new venture in Lebanon. We saw an opportunity to merge our diverse skills and bring to fruition a long-held dream of creating our own space and platform. It was a chance to contribute to a cause we believe in – promoting resilience and fortitude in the face of adversity, particularly within Lebanon's ever-changing and often unstable landscape.

What have you learned from your past experiences and studies, abroad and at home, that you will apply to this new venture?

Our journeys have provided us with a wealth of knowledge and skills we are eager to apply to this new venture. With over two decades of work in various fields, including academia, art, research, HR, communication, and program management, we have developed a unique blend of competencies to approach this project from multiple angles.

Pamela: My background in the sciences of religions/theology, cultural studies, art, and intercultural dialogue, combined with my extensive experience in teaching, research, and communication, equips me to foster an inclusive cultural environment. My artistic endeavors exhibited worldwide, underscore my commitment to this project's creative and cultural aspects. As an activist, my dedication to gender issues, human rights, and peace education resonates strongly with our mission.

Michele: My expertise in HR, organizational design, and cross-cultural management, coupled with my passion for culinary arts and creative pursuits, adds a distinct dimension to our project. My zest for life and commitment to embracing diverse cultures and traditions align perfectly with our vision for a welcoming and inclusive space.

What is it like to work in Lebanon nowadays? And how do you think your past experiences will help you in this new environment?

Working in Lebanon at the moment presents an unprecedented set of challenges. The country has been grappling with a socio-economic and political crisis since 2019, compounded by a modern/contemporary history marked by wars and, more recently, the devastating explosion in the Beirut port. The future remains uncertain, making it a complex environment for work and launching new projects, especially in the arts and culture.
Our past experiences have taught us to be adaptable and prepared for the unexpected. We have learned the value of contingency plans and the ability to pivot in adversity. Our goal isn't merely to survive but to live and thrive. Despite its troubles, Lebanon is a place of immense beauty and a rich cultural heritage that spans millennia. Our past has equipped us with the resilience and determination to navigate this complex landscape and contribute positively to the country's cultural and artistic scene. We are excited to face these challenges and work towards a brighter future.

Pamela, you are both an established artist and a researcher and curator. What aspects of your work do you want to infuse into Kulturnest?

My background as an artist, researcher/academic, and curator provides a kaleidoscopic perspective that I want to infuse into Kulturnest. As an artist, I have always been drawn to the intersection of culture, identity, and dialogue. I want to bring this artistic lens to our exhibitions and events, creating a space that celebrates diverse voices and encourages critical thinking and reflection.
My experience as a researcher/academic has taught me the importance of in-depth exploration and interdisciplinary approaches. I want to ensure that Kulturnest is a hub for intellectual engagement and knowledge exchange, where we can delve into the cultural, historical, and social contexts that shape the art we showcase.
As a curator, I have had the privilege of bringing together artists and audiences in Canada, the UAE, Lebanon, and the metaverse. I want to use this expertise to curate thought-provoking exhibitions and events that foster dialogue, understanding, and connection. Ultimately, I hope to infuse Kulturnest with a sense of curiosity, inclusivity, and a commitment to the transformative power of the arts.

Michele, you are an expert in HR, but you also have a passion for culinary arts and alcoholic blends. How will Kulturnest reflect your varied interests?

Kulturnest authentically embodies my diverse interests, allowing me to draw upon my management experience to ensure the seamless operation of various facets of this cultural space. This encompasses overseeing the café and managing the different offerings in close collaboration with my sister and our dedicated team.
Moreover, my profound passion for the culinary arts, particularly when it comes to handcrafted spirits like limoncello and arak, will take center stage at Kulturnest. I'm enthusiastic about sharing my expertise and creations, inviting our patrons to savor the unique flavors I take pride in crafting. This not only adds a distinctive and alluring dimension to our offerings but also allows me to connect with fellow connoisseurs of artisanal creations.
Ultimately, my vision for Kulturnest is to become the welcoming host for arts and culture enthusiasts, fostering an environment where individuals can come together to celebrate and appreciate the beauty of life through culture. This project represents the fusion of my professional acumen and personal passions, creating a space where diversity, creativity, and all forms of artistic and cultural expression can coexist harmoniously.

Speaking of Kulturnest, where does the name stem from? And what does it represent for you?

The name "Kulturnest" has a profound meaning for us. "Kulturnest" translates to "Culture Nest," embodying the idea of a nurturing and welcoming space for culture to thrive. The name was carefully chosen to represent our vision of providing a sanctuary for the arts and culture.
A nest, in nature, is a place of safety and growth, where life begins and blossoms. In the same way, we see Kulturnest as a place where artistic and cultural expressions can flourish. It is a haven for artists to exhibit, learn, and grow in their creative journeys. But it is not just for artists; it is also a place where the community can gather, appreciate, and participate in the arts.
The symbolism of the nest goes beyond this nurturing aspect. It also reflects the idea of connection and intercultural dialogue. Just as a nest is woven with various materials, our cultural space brings together individuals from diverse backgrounds, igniting a thriving cultural network. It represents a space where people can come together, share their stories, and celebrate the richness of Lebanon's cultural mosaic.
In essence, "Kulturnest" signifies a place of cultural celebration, learning, and community engagement—an actual nest of culture that embraces inclusivity, resilience, and the transformative power of the arts.

What do you want to achieve with this project? And how do you see it impacting the Lebanon art scene?

With Kulturnest, our primary goal is to create a dynamic, homey, and inclusive cultural hub that fosters the growth of Lebanon's arts and artists. We want to empower emerging talents, provide them with a platform to showcase their work and support the rekindling of Lebanon's arts and culture, especially in the face of ongoing challenges and crises.
In terms of impact, we envision several positive changes in the Lebanese art scene. Firstly, we aim to amplify the voices of local artists and make their work more accessible to a broader audience, both locally and, hopefully, in the next stage, internationally. This increased visibility can help local artists gain recognition and support for their creative endeavors.
Secondly, we want to encourage intercultural dialogue and community engagement. We want to bridge divides, foster understanding, and celebrate the shared humanity that unites us all by bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds to appreciate and participate in the arts. The arts can break down barriers and build connections; we want to harness this power.
Lastly, Kulturnest can help catalyze change in Lebanon's cultural landscape in the long run. By promoting a culture of peace, justice, and resilience, we aim to inspire others to join us in our mission. We hope our efforts will contribute to a more vibrant and resilient arts and culture sector in Lebanon, ultimately strengthening the nation's cultural identity and countering its challenges.

All in all, Kulturnest aims to be a revolutionary platform that will offer both artists, art lovers, and professionals a space to meet and exchange ideas. In fact, at Kulturnest you will take care of several different aspects, from exhibitions, to consulting, coworking spaces, and also a cafe. How do you plan to integrate all these different aspects?

Indeed, Kulturnest is designed to be a versatile and multifaceted platform catering to various arts and cultural aspects. We aim to integrate these elements seamlessly, creating a holistic environment that nurtures creativity and community engagement.
At Kulturnest, our exhibitions are a focal point, allowing artists to showcase their work and connect with art enthusiasts. These exhibitions are complemented by consulting services, where artists can receive guidance on their artistic journeys and professional development. By offering this support, we aim to help artists thrive and grow.
Our co-working spaces provide artists, art practitioners, digital nomads, etc., a conducive environment for their creative processes. It is a space where they can work, collaborate, and network with like-minded individuals. We believe in the power of collaboration, and this co-working aspect adds a layer of interactivity and synergy to Kulturnest.
Additionally, our café is an essential part of the experience, providing a space for relaxation and socializing. It is a place for visitors to unwind, enjoy cultural events, and engage in discussions about art and culture. The café adds a welcoming and communal dimension to the platform.
In line with our commitment to fostering solidarity and social responsibility, Kulturnest also features a concept store that showcases our designs alongside our valued partners' designs. We believe in supporting and promoting the work of local artisans and creators, thereby contributing to the sustainability of the arts and crafts industry. Furthermore, we offer space leasing opportunities for individuals and organizations who share our passion for art, culture, and community.
Overall, the integration of these elements is central to our mission. We want Kulturnest to be more than just a traditional gallery; we want it to be a thriving cultural hub that brings together artists, art lovers, professionals, students, and local community members to celebrate and foster the arts and culture.

You are soon opening your first exhibition, Unyielding. Tell us more about the artists you will work with and those you plan to engage with in the future. What artists are you interested in? And do you want to focus on any aspect or theme in particular for your future exhibitions?

Kulturnest's upcoming exhibition, 'Unyielding,' is a significant milestone that encapsulates our vision for the future. We are thrilled to work with a diverse group of 22 localartists, each bringing their unique perspectives and artistic expressions to our space. The artists featured in 'Unyielding' hail from various backgrounds, representing emerging talents and established creators who share our commitment to inclusivity in the art world. The exhibition celebrates resilience and fortitude, embodying the spirit of inner strength, courage, and the determination to overcome adversity.
For future exhibitions at Kulturnest, we aim to continue this tradition of embracing artists from all walks of life, providing a platform for their creative voices to be heard. Our focus remains on creating inclusive spaces where art is democratized, transcending boundaries, and resonating with audiences from various backgrounds.
At Kulturnest, we are passionate about addressing themes such as women's rights, human rights, the intersection of AI and the arts, and more in our future exhibitions. We believe in the power of art to be a catalyst for meaningful conversations on these crucial topics. Furthermore, our vision extends to fostering collaborations and connections beyond our borders. We are excited about potential partnerships with galleries, cultural spaces, and artists worldwide, including the vibrant Lebanese and Southwestern Asian/North African diaspora communities. These collaborations can take shape in physical, digital, or hybrid projects, creating opportunities for cross-cultural dialogue and artistic exchange.

Lastly, where do you see this project in five years from now? What are your long-term goals and dreams?

In five years, we envision Kulturnest as a thriving hub for the arts and culture in Lebanon, the Southwestern Asian region, and beyond. Our long-term goals and dreams are to continue expanding our platform and establishing ourselves as a dynamic and inclusive cultural space.
We aim to become a reference point for artists and art lovers, a place that celebrates diversity, fosters creative expression, and contributes to the cultural fabric of our society. In addition, we aspire to host more international collaborations and projects, creating a global network of artistic connections.
As a team, we dream of nurturing the growth of emerging talents and creating more opportunities for artists to showcase their work. We plan to develop our concept store further, offering a unique space for artists and designers to share their creations. Ultimately, we aim to inspire and empower our community to engage with the arts and explore the endless possibilities of cultural expression.
Kulturnest is more than a space; it's a continuously evolving journey.
