INTERVIEW | Pablo Von Goethe

Pablo von Goethe, painter, was born in 1982 in Kaiserslautern, Germany.

Since 2015, the trained accountant has been fascinated by the works of the Great Masters, especially Michelangelo and Pablo Picasso, to art, creating his worlds on canvases. In doing so, he takes on the role of Pablo von Goethe. On the basis of his own poems, his works emerge from the eyes of the protagonists of his stories, who always cite the verses of being. In the course of time, his own style developed, which the autodidact taught himself. The works, which have been created over the years, usually have profound contents that invite the viewer to dive into the created worlds in order to search for the messages and the mediated values.

The Pictures show the inner struggle and the Illusory world in which we live, which makes us forget that we are already living in paradise and that we are inexorably destroying.

Describe the intention behind your art. How would you define yourself as an artist?

The basis for my pictures is my poems and stories, which always quote the verses of being. I want to transform my thoughts into a sort of visible reality and invite the viewer to dive into my created worlds, to fathom the messages contained in them, and to find him or herself, if possible, in them. The canvas becomes one with me, guides the brushes, and talks to me.

What were the influences that shaped who you would become?

I have always looked for possibilities to express my thoughts. At first, I used the pictures in my head and put them into words, but soon that wasn't enough for me anymore. At that point, I discovered painting for myself. Especially the works of Michelangelo, Picasso, or even Basquiat opened the door for me. I found the expressiveness of individual paintings fascinating.

How do you feel your work is unique and truly your own?

My works are based on my poems, so they are the mouthpiece of my thoughts, my soul, which makes them unique. In every work there are influences of other artists, nobody can deny that. But I have the ambition to develop my style out of it; I want my work to be unique and not comparable with any other.

What do you believe is a crucial element in creating a good painting?

You can't force something like this. You have to become one with the canvas and go for it completely. Don't try to copy something and make room for your personality.

If you could advise your younger self, what do you wish you knew about painting before you got started?

I would not tell him anything. It would only change the past, and then I would probably not be who I am now.

Do you listen to music while working? If so, what is your favorite genre of music?

Music is extremely important for my work. But it is quite diverse, depending on my feelings or what I want to express with my work. The genres I probably listen to the most are Classic, Elektronik, and Jazz.

Can you tell us about any upcoming shows or collaborations you have on the horizon?

At the moment, I can't say much about it. Life first has to regain its normality.

Can I visit your studio?

My studio is my secret retreat, but you can always view my work.
