Yanlin Song - Artist Portrait
Yanlin Song | Guest Artist
Yanlin Song is a multidisciplinary illustrator based in Shanghai. She began her formal painting training in 2008, immersing herself in Impressionist works. In 2022, she left her stable job to pursue independent creative work, choosing illustration as her medium to explore the relationship between herself and the external world.

I put my hand on the bible. He asked me to raise the other hand and say: I swear. I swore. I just didn't want him to send me off to Guantanamo under any pretense. That instant was for me a moment of extreme lucidity. No more illusions. I live in a world I am not able to understand.Of course the customs agent was only doing his job, and his job required him to be afraid of me. His fear wounded me, and I carry it like a scar to this day. I wanted to help him, but I couldn't. The more 1 tried to reassure him, the more suspicious I grew to him.I know that I am just a speck of dust in this machine. A black leg grafted on the body.of another man. What I'm relating in this letter is nothing compared to what thousands of refugees endure, dodging death as they hope for a better world for them and their children.I've always believed that America could be a part of that world. That heart capable of welcoming us all and warming us. My illusions were shattered the night the result of the latest election was announced. My disappointment was huge. I realized that we may never see again this free world we dreamed of so much...
The exhibition brings together a series of works by the Morrocan artist mounir fatmi which explore the foundations of history and social nature, expressed through the written word and by different kinds of language: religious, political, ideological and artistic. On display are a total of 20 projects undertaken from 2002 to today composed of hundreds of pieces from a variety of disciplines such as drawing, photograph, sculpture and video. The discourse of The Day of the Awakening focuses however on two main projects: The Index and the machine and Out of History.
The Day of the Awakening is inspired by the title of an in-stallation by mounir fatmi, who participated first hand in the creation of this exhibition. Its epigraph, simple and enigmatic, acts as a metaphor for an artistic work that con-structs visual spaces and linguistic games. In this way, his work offers a view of the world from a different perspective, avoiding the blindness provided by conventions.

The exploration of the linguistic codes that determine the relationships between individuals, the balance of social interactions, and the importance of dialogue as a collective experience are the elements of a stylistic grammar that sees in the power of language one of the most important codes of cultural contemporaneity. But it is by focusing above all on its contradictions that mounir fatmi- the central figure of this project - explores the methods of communicative correspondence, investigating them with awareness of the extent to which they reflect the evolution of society. It is precisely humanity's continual attempts at expression that dictate the alphabet on which the entire cultural structure is based; and their value can be read in the exaltation of their ambiguities and interpretative variables.Because it is alive, mutable and dynamic, language actually changes, transforms, but also involves itself, as does its decoding within the relevant social system.
Working on the interface of cultures, Mounir Fatmi explores the contemporary world and stages a representation of its intentions and paradoxes. When he goes back over his childhood in Tangier, once home to the Beat Generation, Mounir Fatmi conjures up the curiosity that already drove him then underpins his current practice. it is by tracing the course of the artist’s path, especially his youth in Morocco, artistic studies in Italy, and decision to settle in Paris, that Lillian Davies, the author of this monograph, manages to shed light on the development of his aesthetic and conceptual interests. She thus reveals the constancy of his concerns as regards vocabulary and architecture as well as the percussive force of his works, which juxtapose the different levels of culture, the secular and the religious, the East and the West.
The study thus offers in-depth examination of Mounir Fatmi’s major works as well as an analysis of the political and cultural contexts that he has chosen to explore through photography, video, sculpture, and installations.
“The first major solo presentation by mounir fatmi in Scandinavia comes at a very particular time. In the spring of 2018, Freemuse – an independent organization working with defending the rights and freedom of artistic expression - published its first global report assessing the global state of artistic freedom. It is an important and chilling document about censorship and violations of artistic expression experienced across the globe, including the traditionally democratic western countries. Having himself experienced the consequences of a culture of silencing, mounir fatmi is an artist dedicated to exposing and deconstructing oppressive ideological and religious dogmas in works that shed light some of our most pressing political questions today. Seeking to illuminate the role of artists in a time of crisis, the exhibition at Göteborgs Konsthall particularly addresses the urgency of free speech and seeks to open up the political potential of language as resistance. Engaging in notions of language, and the written word – its beauty, violence and fragility – fatmi’s works expose the layers of interpretation and reinterpretation that comprise our history, but also speaks directly to a culture of censorship and silencing.” Stina Edblom, Artistic Director, Göteborgs Konsthall

The fine art artist’s book Rings on Fire gives an overview of the trilogy series as well as an insight into the artist’s universe and techniques. It also includes work-in-progress images and unpublished biographical material from the artist’s personal archive. First starting with photos of the artist’s environment and workspace, the book further continues with photos of the three chapters of the series and limited-edition pictures.
The Book “Visiones Interiores” is a work born from the constant exploration of inner dialogue and emotional complexity. Information, like a living mass, muta-tes, fuses, and constantly transforms; concepts blend with experiences to generate a new space, a continuous movement of infinite ideas always ready to reveal themselves. This work is an act of in-tuition and decision-making, where the selected or discarded elements mix to create new rules. Each object, with its own story, is prepared to write a new one in a new scene.

Two photographers, one city. Mounir Fatmi and Guillaume de Sardes lived and photographed Tangier. Their different perspectives do not claim to capture the city — could that even be done? —, but rather to reproduce the sense of a city. The approach is subjective, sensitive to the passage of time, balancing documentary and fiction.
Mounir Fatmi:
Brimming with details, the photographs in this series capture the atmosphere of a constantly changing city where bodies literally blend into the background. In this sense, they are weighed down by a sociological weight, but they are just as much about intimate and memorial exploration.
Guillaume de Sardes:
By mixing image and text, Guillaume de Sardes also questions the relationship between photography and literature: “Images fix my memories, writing clarifies them. For me, photography is above all the means of retaining a moment and literature is to give it meaning.” In doing so, he places his work in line with that of another traveller who lingered in Tangier more than sixty years ago: the poet and photographer Allen Ginsberg.
In September 2017, mounir fatmi opened an exhibition in New York at the Jane Lombard Gallery. Through the reading of two texts, a personal letter addressed to his gallerist, and a set of poems, the artist explained his decision not to travel to the United States, instead, learning about how his exhibition was seen and received through social media and the perspective of strangers. These comments left at the gallery as well as online, were transposed into poems via the cut-up process, by the artist and a machine, producing a form of digital poetry. The Missing Show envisions language in the post-internet age in its transitive potential of individualism and individuation. Experiencing reality in all its discontinuity, mounir fatmi raises language to the level of a form of resistance.
This publication was made on the occasion of the exhibition, While the Storm Arrives, by Moroccan artist mounir fatmi, at Ex Baluard Museu d'Art Modern i Contemporani in Palma, from 17th March to 19th June 2022.

“There is something analogous to this scientific and fictional proliferation in fatmi’s work, in this use of different supports, in his back and forth movements between different themes, his outlined, reprised or abandoned narratives. In a way, we could say that he appropriates the enigmatic discovery of a form of energy that seems inexhaustible but also uncontrollable - except that in his case the subject is a metaphorical equivalent of the nuclear, namely, desire and the irresistible attraction that it triggers. But then is the difference really so great? What matters, indeed, in both instances, is the moment, between the before and the after - imminence, you might say, that is to say, a time-space without real consistency, without real duration. What comes next is a form of unfolding, with its options and possible narrative trajectories. Before the reaction is triggered, before the lips touch and nothing is the same as before. Such is the kiss in the works of the “Casablanca Circles” series. It is a catastrophe, a rupture, the almost unassignable moment whereby everything changes. The beauty of the thing is that around this impalpable non-moment so many expectations and narrative possibilities are precipitated. Countless underground connections appear, crossovers, secret coincidences, so that in this work there hovers a subtle perfume of paranoia.” Régis Durand.
There are 21 illustrations, a photograph, and a video still in this 52 pages book which consists of maps and images that relate to each day.
This artist’s book provides insight into the process of creating the final work. The book shows the chronology of the days using excerpts of our daily communication along with images providing some visual insight into the work.

Al-Tiba9 Gallery
Al-Tiba9 was founded in 2013 by curator Mohamed Benhadj to address contemporary art, performance, and fashion design, and it announced the opening of its art gallery in the historic center of Barcelona on the occasion of its 10th anniversary. The Born neighborhood hosts Al-Tiba9's main headquarters, including a print art magazine focusing on contemporary international artists who engender new visions about possible futures. Mohamed Benhadj's gallery, which operates under Al-Tiba9 Contemporary, is the first international art gallery founded by an Algerian curator in Barcelona.
The space was built by José Fontseré Mestre, a figure of the Catalan modernism, and has 300 m2. Likewise, it is located five minutes from the Picasso Museum, Moco Museum, MEAM European Museum of Modern Art, and El Born CCM. The gallery seeks to be a bridge between the MENA region and Europe, a solid link between the East and the West by offering the world a unique experience of creativity, possibility, and growth like no other around the globe.
