Description

This monograph of sculptor and visual artist Pavel Korbička is being published on the occasion of his exhibition entitled Deflection at the Brno House of Arts, which took place from March 13 to April 28, 2019. Nevertheless, its concept is wider, with the intention of also revealing and identifying the origin of the form of the exhibition. The Deflection exhibition itself is dealt with in the first part of the book, including a study by Prague art historian and theorist Ladislav Kesner. The second part of the book, entitled Three Perspectives (Three Perspectives of Light), presents the three basic features of the artist's work, the essential component of which is artificial light. The first chapter, entitled The Focus of Space, is accompanied by a study by Lisbon art historian, theoretician, and curator Mário Caeiro, who discusses the hidden qualities of a particular "space" as the basis for the form of artistic work. The second chapter, entitled The Space of the Body, includes a study by Brno artist historian and curator Ilona Víchová, discussing the phenomenon of "the body" as a natural source of exploring space through its own movement. The last chapter, entitled The Event of Space, is accompanied by an introductory theoretical text by art historian and curator Miroslava Hájek of Novara, Italy. This is followed by a contribution from Prague philosopher Miroslav Petříček, who discusses the "relationship" between body and space. Viewers discover that they conform to their physical activity in an "infinite" movement of optical processes. This monograph is thus not a retrospective study but a selection of important works revealing the meaning and diversity of the artist's work.
