Dimitris Ntokos, Giallo, 2023, Oil on Linen, 190 × 150 cm

Dimitris Ntokos’ work unfolds through a careful balance between structure and materiality. His compositions operate within a restrained visual vocabulary, where form, gesture, and surface interact in subtle tension. Through layered textures and measured chromatic fields, the artist constructs spaces that invite slow observation and contemplative engagement.

Ntokos develops a pictorial environment in which reduction becomes a method of inquiry. The works explore the relationship between density and openness, allowing the viewer to experience painting as a field of perception.

This exhibition at Al-Tiba9 Gallery continues the dialogue between the artist and the gallery, presenting a selection of works that reflect the evolution of Ntokos’ practice and his ongoing investigation into the possibilities of abstraction and visual structure.

Dimitris Ntokos, Autumn, 2020, Acrylic on canvas, 170 × 170 cm

Dimitris Ntokos first emerged on the Greek art scene as a street artist, drawing heavily on the symbolism of ancient Egypt. His early works featured the scarab motif, which later evolved into compositions dominated by hieroglyphs. Ntokos primarily works with acrylics and oils in vivid, saturated colors.

What stands out in his practice as an emergent artist is that the symbols he paints are rarely repeated, whether he’s working on canvas, a car, a wall, or a mirror. Each symbol follows the next in a sequence, unfolding like a mysterious papyrus, a cryptic letter, or a coded diary, open to interpretation through the viewer’s gaze. In his latest series, Ntokos takes a distinctive turn: each ideogram is now isolated within a square canvas, contrasting with previous works where the symbols densely covered the surface in a flowing succession. Throughout his career, Ntokos has gradually shifted from storytelling to focusing on the individual "letter." It's as if, through a magnifying glass, the viewer is invited to examine the intricacies of his earlier works—studying each letterform in detail, each stroke of his symbolic language. In doing so, they enter the threshold of Ntokos’ labyrinthine visual lexicon.

Al-Tiba9 Gallery

Al-Tiba9 was founded in 2013 by curator Mohamed Benhadj to address contemporary art, performance, and fashion design, and it announced the opening of its art gallery in the historic center of Barcelona on the occasion of its 10th anniversary. The Born neighborhood hosts Al-Tiba9's main headquarters, including a print art magazine focusing on contemporary international artists who engender new visions about possible futures. Mohamed Benhadj's gallery, which operates under Al-Tiba9 Contemporary, is the first international art gallery founded by an Algerian curator in Barcelona.

The space was built by José Fontseré Mestre, a figure of the Catalan modernism, and has 300 m2. Likewise, it is located five minutes from the Picasso Museum, Moco Museum, MEAM European Museum of Modern Art, and El Born CCM. The gallery seeks to be a bridge between the MENA region and Europe, a solid link between the East and the West by offering the world a unique experience of creativity, possibility, and growth like no other around the globe.
