10th Anniversary Show at Al-Tiba9 Gallery

10th ANNIVERSARY Exhibition | Group Show at Al-Tiba9 Gallery

Al-Tiba9 Contemporary; new art gallery and a space for contemporary art and artistic promotion in a historical building in Barcelona.

Opening 06.10.2023 at 18.30

The international cultural platform Al-Tiba9, announces the opening of its art gallery that will take place at Calle Comerç 11, 08003 Barcelona, on October 6, 2023 to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the project.

Al-Tiba9 —a cultural project founded by curator Mohamed Benhadj to address contemporary art, performance, and fashion design— announces the opening of its art gallery in the historic center of Barcelona. The Born neighborhood of the city will host the project’s main headquarters, including a print art magazine focusing on contemporary international artists who engender new visions about possible futures. Mohamed Benhadj’s gallery, which will operate under Al-Tiba9 Contemporary, will be the first international art gallery founded by an Algerian curator in Barcelona.

The space was built by José Fontseré Mestre, a figure of the Catalan modernism, and has 300 m2. Likewise, it is located five minutes from the Picasso Museum, Moco Museum, MEAM European Museum of Modern Art, and El Born CCM. The gallery seeks to be a bridge between the MENA region and Europe—regions that share history and the sea, among other things and will expand the original mission of the project.

10th Anniversary Show

The 10th edition of the Al-Tiba9 exhibition will take place this year at the Al-Tiba9 Contemporary Gallery. The opening is scheduled for October 6th, 2023, at 6:30 PM, and the exhibition will be open to the public until November 18th, 2023.
The exhibition of this artistic manifestation was born in Algiers in 2013 and then spread internationally in 2015. This year, it presents a retrospective exhibition of the last 10 years (2013-2023).
The curator of the exhibition and founder of Al-Tiba9, Mohamed Benhadj, brings together international artists for this show. Each artist represents a specific year and symbolizes their participation in previous editions of Al-Tiba9 that took place at the BARDO National Museum in Algiers, MAMA Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Algiers, UPF Pompeu Fabra de la Ciutadella in Barcelona.

As in Algiers, the Catalan artistic scene will, therefore, be invited to experience the exhibitions of curator Mohamed Benhadj through a cutting-edge selection of works of art in painting, photography, installation, sculpture, video, and light design. The 10th edition of Al-Tiba9 and the gallery’s inauguration will occur during the Barcelona Art Week, which coincides with the contemporary art fair SWAB Barcelona 2023, a meeting place for Catalan, Spanish, and international art galleries.

Al-Tiba9 has become not only an annual exhibition of contemporary art but also a large art gallery, a space of inspiration, and a community of international artists whose founder is our dear Algerian Mohamed Benhadj.

Founder & Curator

Mohamed Benhadj, one of the most influential art curators from Algeria with a decade in the international field of contemporary art, is the icon of performance art known for his audacious and avant-garde style since his first beginnings in Algiers in 2010. Driven by his vision of a common global platform to provide growth opportunities to emerging artists in contemporary art, Benhadj established Al- Tiba9 in 2013. Since then, he has focused on the international exhibition of modern art, performance, and fashion design, promoting the exchange between art institutions and artists gathering an Arab social-cultural environment. As a booster of the international cultural exchange in contemporary art in Algeria, he strengthened international artists’ possibilities of change and growth by exchanging and promoting art on a broader level.

In 2014, Mohamed extended his philosophy to Barcelona, Spain, and in 2017, he gave his art exhibitions a new touch by merging performance and fashion design as an alternative platform for independent designers to freely express themselves and introduce them to the art world. Mohamed Benhadj has been carrying on his journey for over ten years now, collaborating with the Ministry of Culture, Museums, Art Institutions, Embassies, and Art Centers, and becoming the most active curator from Algeria to establish his big art gallery in the heart of Barcelona representing a mix of Eastern and Western artists with a special focus in African and Middle Eastern art.

His goal is to create a new pole of contemporary art in North Africa, creating a solid cultural bridge between the East and the West by offering the world a unique experience of creativity, possibility, and growth like no other around the globe.
