Tianyun Yu - Portrait

Tianyun Yu is a London-based visual artist operating at the intersection of visual communication and computational arts. Holding an MFA from Goldsmiths and a BA from the China Academy of Art, she merges algorithmic thinking with immersive storytelling to create complex digital narratives. Her work has been exhibited at major venues including the Victoria & Albert Museum, Shanghai West Bund Art Centre, and London Ubica Gallery. Yu is a recipient of multiple international awards, such as the Creative Communication Award and the Fortune Art Award.

Rooted in the heritage of traditional Eastern aesthetics yet driven by emerging technologies, Tianyun Yu creates immersive narratives that explore the transformation of natural environments. By building the embodiment of visual artworks, the artist aims to provoke a re-examination of the relationship between subjectivity and objecthood, inviting the viewer to step inside the narrative rather than merely observe it.

The immersive interactive installation Roar of Sea is inspired by the 2000 Bahamas whale stranding and visualizes the invisible violence of ocean noise. For whales relying on echolocation, the cacophony of oil extraction effectively blinds them. The work reconstructs this sensory experience via digital synesthesia, embodying the fragility of marine perception amidst industrial disruption.
