Randa Hijazi - Portrait
Randa Hijazi is a Syrian-Canadian visual artist based in Laval, Quebec, whose practice reflects the convergence of her Eastern roots with experiences of migration, identity, and belonging within a Western cultural context. Born and educated in Damascus, she studied Fine Arts and later Journalism and Media Studies, a dual background that shaped her ability to merge emotional depth with analytical clarity. From early on, her work documented human and cultural narratives, communities, women, memory, war, and the longing for home, seeking to build a visual bridge between cultures and highlight shared human struggle, pain, hope, and resilience. After moving to Canada, her artistic horizon expanded in scale and space, leading to large-scale public works such as the monumental painting Canada, where painting becomes a visual project engaging with migration, integration, and public space. Alongside this expansion, her practice evolved toward Organic Surrealism, a language of biomorphic forms inspired by nature, the human body, and inner psychological landscapes, interwoven with symbols of memory and displacement. Through this synthesis of public murals and inner imagination, Hijazi creates works that invite viewers to feel, remember, and engage affirming art as a human and cultural bridge.
