Doug Winter - Portrait

Doug Winter (b. 1966) is a photographic artist and filmmaker based in Denver, Colorado, living with impaired vision. Influenced by his father’s sudden blindness and his own stroke-related vision loss, Winter approaches photography conceptually, modifying cameras and using degraded film to explore how memory and perception fragment and rebuild. Rejecting digital correction, his work examines photography’s limitations as evidence and truth.

Winter has received notable recognition, including a Seeding Creativity grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, and was a semifinalist for the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition 2025. He has exhibited internationally, including in Venice and Shanghai, and completed a residency at Hong Museum, China. His works are held in collections such as MoCA Cultural Association (Venice), Hong Museum (Shanghai), and the National Steinbeck Center. Winter’s practice honors the diversity of personal truths, using analog methods to create evocative, nonrepresentational images that connect memory, sensation, and experience.
