Caroline Berthelot Williams | Sculpture

Caroline Berthelot Williams - Portrait

Caroline Berthelot Williams works primarily with stone, an often overlooked material in contemporary art, to reconnect viewers with the origins of sculpture. Through skilled technique, she transforms marble, alabaster, and limestone, making their origins secondary to her artistic vision. Her focus is not on showcasing the raw material but on expressing a cherished mythological world and the emotions within it. Drawing on transcriptions of Titian, Rubens, and Leighton, she reflects on the representation of women in art, using myth to highlight strength, power, and resilience often overlooked today.

Working abstractly, she uses shape, folds, texture, and movement to create an emotional experience that goes beyond physical material, shifting attention from stone’s weight to its fluid possibilities. Her sculptures centre on “static” or “implied” movement, forms poised in tension, inviting the viewer to actively interpret their shifting lines.

Caroline’s background spans painting, toy design, and ceramics, including residencies in Jingdezhen. This foundation led her to sculpture at City & Guilds of London Art School, where she earned distinctions. Since graduating in 2024, she has exhibited at Bowman Sculpture Gallery and in a solo show with the Crème Fraîche Program, with works now in US and UK collections.
